Veteran Director Chitralaya Sridhar is No More

cv sridharDirector CV Sridhar also known as Chitralaya Sridhar is one of the chief architects of contemporary south Indian cinema. Sridhar passed away on Monday October 20th due to cardiac arrest at the age of 75. Chitralaya Sridhar made telugu films like Pellikanuka, Manase Mandhiram, Preminchi Choodu, Vayasu Pilichindhi, Sita Geetha Datithe, Urvasi Neeve Naa Preyasi, Prema Sangamam etc. He got the name Chitralaya from his production house Chitralaya Pictures.

Sridhar was born and brought up in Chengalpattu, Tamilnadu. He used to write stage plays from his early age. He left his co-operation department job to find life in film field.

cv sridharHis play titled "Rathapasam" was so popular that it has been made to a movie. The first movie he directed was "Kalyana Parisu" in tamil in the 50's starring Gemini Ganesan, Saroja Devi and Akkineni Nageswara Rao played a guest role. This was remade to telugu as "Pelli Kanuka" which was a super hit in those days. Sridhar's screen-play and dialogues was unique in style at that time.

Sridhar also has the credit of introducing Jayalalitha (Ex-CM Tamilnadu), Venniradai Nirmala and Kanchana (who was an air hostess) to the cinema field. His film 'Vayasu Pilichindhi' with Kamal Hassan and Rajinikanth was a super hit in both Telugu and Tamil and created various records.

Sridhar also started a magazine named 'Chitralaya'. Sridhar was survived by wife Devasena (Woman from Nellore), son, daughter and grandson. South Indian Cinema will always remember his great contributions.
