A convincing film with good twists

The title of the film 'Ashta Chemma' evoked good response right from the day one of the shooting. Moreover, the presence of an award-winning director like Mohanakrishna Indraganti and popular Maa TV anchor-turned-artiste 'Swati' enhanced the craze on the film among the film lovers. Another interesting point in this film is the presence of Telugu stars alone with no other language artistes. A major part of the film was shot in the city, while 30 per cent of the film was picturised in rural backdrop. With the story of the film having many twists and turns, the director chose to give the film a title called 'Ashta Chemma'.

Story

Lavanya (Swathi) is the fan of Maheshbabu. She loves him so much and wants to marry him. As there is no such opportunity with Maheshbabu marrying Namrata, she decides to marry a person whose name is at least Mahesh. Her neighbor Anand (Srinivas) agrees to help Lavanya in this regard and catches a boy called Mahesh (Naani) and introduces him to her. They both fall in love. However, upon learning that Lavanya is fond of the name Maheshbabu, her boyfriend goes into depression. In fact, Mahesh's original name is Rambabu and everyone in the village call him Rambabu. Lavanya's aunt Mandira (Jhansi) did not agree the alliance as Mahesh @ Rambabu fails to give a correct answer about the property and his sister. At the same time, Anand accidentally watches the photograph of Varalakshmi and loses his heart. On learning the problem, he decides to solve it and goes to their village Lakkavaram. Now it is the turn of Rambabu to start making efforts to save his sister from falling in love with Anand. Was he able to do that? Did Lavanya agrees to marry Rambabu as she was particular about Mahesh? Who is Rambabu @ Mahesh? Did Rambabu able to convince Lavanya? What kind of trick Anand played to unit Rambabu and Lavanya? Did Mandira gives her nod for their marriage? Answers to all these questions form part of the climax.

Performance

Swathi, who perfectly handled a programme called 'Colours' in Maa TV turned a film artiste. She had a good track record with a nice performance in 'Aadavari Maatalaku Aradhale Verule'. She had the ability to deliver good performance and also had good dialogue modulation capability. All these qualities helped her and she was proved a right choice for the character of 'Lavanya' in this movie. Naani, who is a well-known Radio Jackie (RJ) made his debut as hero in this film and he too gave an excellent performance. Though a novice, Srinivas did a nice job in the role of a friend. His roll reminds the audiences Narada / Krishna of Hindu epic. Jhansi, Bhargavi, Hema and Tanikella Bharani did justice to their respective roles.

Technical

As far as the departments behind the screen, dialogues, screenplay and direction by Mohanakrishna are superb and one can't find any loopholes in any of them. However, music by Kalyani Malik is not that appealing. But for the title song and the first duet between the hero and heroine, other songs are not worth mentioning. Even the lyrical value of other songs is average. Camera by PG Vinda is first rate. Especially, the picturization of scenes in rural areas is very good. Editing by Marthand K Venkatesh is also fine as there almost no irrelevant scenes in the film. Production values of Art Beat Capital Pvt Ltd are okay.

Remarks

Winning criticical acclaim is okay for any director. But this time, the director not only could stay relaxed and rest assured that he would get a positive reviews from everyone, but he achieved another compliment in the form of presenter and distributor. D Sureshbabu agreed to present the movie as he was convinced with the subject, another director Sekhar Kammula came forward to distribute the film abroad, after watching the movie and satisfying with the story and its movement. This proves that the film is worth watching.
